Direct-Mount Your Pickups — Without Destroying the Ears

Traditional direct mounting means drilling out the pickup’s threaded mounting tabs (the “ears”) and driving wood screws into the body. The pickup is permanently modified. The wood strips from repeated height adjustments. This kit solves both problems with threaded inserts and a custom screw design.

What’s Included

  • Custom-designed machine screws with a smooth, unthreaded shank near the head (allows the pickup to “float” for height adjustment)
  • Brass threaded inserts that seat permanently in the guitar body
  • Free precision mounting tool

How It Works

The brass insert goes into the body. The machine screw threads into the insert — metal on metal. The smooth shank section lets the pickup ear slide freely up and down the shaft, so you get precise height adjustment just by turning the screw. No foam, no shims, no matchbooks. The pickup’s factory threading stays completely untouched.

Why This Matters

  • Your pickup stays stock. The ear passes over the smooth shank — no drilling, no modification. Sell it later, put it back in a mounting ring, swap guitars. The pickup is unchanged.
  • The body wood never strips. The screw threads into a metal insert, not wood fibers. Adjust height a thousand times — it holds.
  • It’s fully reversible. Pull the screws, and the pickup goes back in a mounting ring like nothing happened.

Why Direct Mount?

When a pickup sits directly in the body — no ring, no springs — it’s mechanically coupled to the wood. The result: tighter bass, more focused midrange, and a more immediate attack under your fingers. Eddie Van Halen figured this out with the Frankenstrat in 1977. Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel, and Kiesel ship their top-tier guitars with direct-mounted pickups for the same reason. Now you can retrofit it on any guitar — without the compromises.

Imperial or Metric?

  • Imperial thread — For US-made pickups (Gibson, Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Bare Knuckle, etc.)
  • Metric thread — For import pickups and some Asian-made guitars
